Border Security Force detained a smuggler and medicines worth approx Rs.06 lakh on the Indo-Bangladesh Border


Tirthankar Mukharjee, 24 Parganas : In two separate incidents on 31 August/01 Sep, 2021, Border Security Force foiling a smuggling attempt under the South Bengal Frontier and medicines worth Rs 5,98,429/- and apprehended one smuggler on the spot.

On 31 August, 2021 acting on the intelligence input the troops of Border Out post Haridaspur, 158 Battalion conducted a search operation in a truck parking area near Haridaspur Bazar, during which at around 2230 hrs the Search party observed a man coming with a motor van, which was trying to run away after seeing the BSF jawans but the jawans apprehended him without giving any chance. On being searched the motor van, from which 05 bags of medicines were recovered. The estimated price of which is Rs 1,54,710/-. The party seized the motor van along with the medicines on the spot and also took the van driver (smuggler) into custody. The apprehended van driver (smuggler) has been identified as Ashish Sheel, age – 29 years, Village – Bhabanipur, PO – Old Bangaon, PS – Petrapole, District – North 24 Parganas.

During preliminary questioning, the apprehended Indian man (smuggler) revealed that he is a resident of Bangaon and works as a motor van driver. He further revealed that today (August 31, 2021) a person named Niranjan, a resident of Petrapole had hired his motor van on rent for dropped the packets from Bangaon to Lakhi truck parking at Haridaspur, for which he would have got Rs 1,000. But as soon as he reached near the parking area. BSF apprehended him with the packets. He also revealed that he was just going to drop the items for wages.

In another incident, On 01 september, 2021 the troops of Border Out Post Dobarpara, 158 Battalion, Sector Kolkata, acting on Intelligence input , Coy commander of Border Out Post Dobarpara extra alerted his troops on duty on border. Mean while at around 1230 hrs, BSF troops observed movement of some suspicious persons along with large bags (potlas) to the International Boundary.

They were trying to go to Bangladesh illegally for the purpose of smuggling, on being challenged by the BSF jawans, they tried to run back, the jawans chased them fast but they left the bag there and managed to escape by taking advantage of the dens crop and darkness. When BSF troops reached the spot and searched the area intensively, 02 bags were recovered from there, in which various types of medicines were found. The estimated cost of which were found to be Rs 4,43, 719/-.

The apprehended smuggler and the seized medicines have been handed over to the Police Station Gaighata for further legal action.

Harendra Singh Tomar Commanding Officer, 158 Battalion has expressed happiness over the achievements of his jawans, as a result of which 01 smuggler apprehended and a large consignment of medicines seized. He stated that this has been possible only because of the alertness displayed by his jawans on duty.
